What It Is
What Are Full Dentures?
If you need to replace all of your upper or lower teeth at one time, a full denture or ‘plate’ will be used. This full-arch restoration rests directly over your gum tissues, creating a seal between your mouth and the prosthesis. We can customise the teeth on your full denture to meet your individual preferences.
What About Partial Dentures?
A partial denture replaces all of your missing teeth while leaving your healthy ones intact. The appliance snaps into place around your existing smile so that you can avoid unnecessary extractions and preserve the teeth you still have. Each of the ‘teeth’ on your partial will be matched to the ones on either side of it, allowing your prosthesis to blend in with your smile.
Should I Get a Denture?
Deciding on the best replacement for your missing teeth is a personal decision. Some people prefer the affordability of dentures, while others wear them temporarily in hopes of getting dental implants one day. Our Artarmon dentist will guide you through the decision process so that you can feel confident about what comes next.
Adjusting to a new denture can take a bit of practice. From speaking with your denture to chewing at mealtime, it’s best to take things slow. Practice talking to yourself in the mirror, as your lips learn to take on a slightly different pattern with your new prosthesis. At meals, start out with softer-textured foods and cut them into small bites.
Living With A Denture
It’s difficult to say how long adjustment periods take, as everyone is different. Some need a few weeks while others adapt to their new denture in just a day or two. Just like a new pair of shoes, a removable prosthesis can take some time to “break in”.
Remove your dentures each night and soak them in an appropriate cleanser. Each morning, brush your denture well and rinse it before putting it back into your mouth. If you find that your appliance feels loose or rubs in certain areas, bring it to Dr Chung for an adjustment.
Be sure to bring your denture with you when you come in for a checkup every six months!
